The Union Cabinet Secretary is expected to issue anytime today a notification for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the theft of Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel medallion and other memorabilia from the Rabindra Memorial Museum in Shantiniketan, following a request for such a probe by the West Bengal Government on Sunday. The notification will be issued under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act 1946, according to the West Bengal Home Secretary, Amit Kiran Deb.
Mr. Deb said here today that a copy of the request for a CBI inquiry had also been sent to the Home Ministry. The Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, had announced his Government's decision to seek the CBI's assistance during a visit to the Vishwa Bharati University campus on Sunday. He had earlier discussed the matter with the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, over the phone.
