`Femina Miss India' denies charge

MUMBAI, MARCH 29. The `Femina Miss India' beauty pageant has run into a controversy with a private television channel today reporting that Laxmi Pandit, who was crowned Miss India (World) 2004 here on Saturday, was married, allegedly violating one of the rules of the pageant.

Ms. Pandit denied the allegation stating that she was still single.

She said she would comment on the charge at a later stage.

The organisers of the pageant are probing the allegations concerning the marital status of Ms. Pandit.

``The winners are right now in the middle of a busy schedule. Hence, we have still not been able to confirm her marital status,'' sources at Femina, organisers of the contest, said here.

They said, ``as per the rules, a contestant has to be an unmarried woman and the winner has to maintain her single status till the end of one year.''

Ms. Pandit, the city-based classical dancer, had bagged the `Miss India-World' crown at `Ponds Femina Miss India 2004' contest held here on Saturday. — UNI, PTI
