Akash test-fired

BALASORE, MARCH 29. India today test-fired the medium range multi-target surface-to-air missile, Akash, twice from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, about 13 km from here, official sources said.

The indigenously built sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles were test-flown from separate mobile launchers at about 3.55 p.m. and 3.57 p.m. Akash, which weighs 650 kg and has a range of 25 km, is one of the five missiles being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is capable of carrying a 50 kg payload and uses an integrated two-stage ramjet propulsion technology.

The DRDO is developing Akash and the state-of-the-art radar, Rajendra, to build a reliable air defence shield. Rajendra can keep track of 64 aircraft simultaneously with various ranges. — PTI
