Attack on cargo vehicles in Nepal condemned

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL 5. India today condemned the attacks on cargo vehicles by Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) insurgents at different places in Nepal in which a number of Indian nationals were shot at and seriously wounded.

"This is a blatant act of terrorism and its perpetrators must be apprehended and punished for their crimes. The Government of India holds the CPN(Maoist) responsible for these incidents," the External Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

India also asked the Nepalese Government to provide full security for Indian personnel and property in Nepal. New Delhi was already working with Kathmandu to confront the challenge of terrorism, the spokesman pointed out.

Far from deterring anti-terrorism cooperation, such incidents would only lead to redoubled efforts by both countries to overcome the danger posed to their security, he said.

"Nepal faces an unprecedented crisis," the statement maintained, adding that a solution demanded mutual understanding among all constitutional forces in the country, in particular the monarchy and political parties.

As a close and friendly neighbour of Nepal, sharing an open border, India hoped that both the constitutional monarchy and the political parties would demonstrate flexibility and forge a national consensus to tackle the current situation with the urgency it deserved.
