KOLLAM, APRIL 5. A man being chased by the police fell into a well and drowned in the Chathannur police station limits this night. The deceased has been identified as Anil. While some said that the man fell into the well on being chased by the police, the police on their part denied it. However, the police said there were a couple of warrants pending against Anil. According to eyewitness accounts, Anil picked up a quarrel with a sugarcane vendor on the premises of the Chathannur Boodanatha Temple, where the annual festival was on. The police arrived at the scene and immediately Anil took to his heels. While fleeing Anil accidentally fell into the well and though the owner of the well, Radhakrishna Pillai, heard the splash he could not inspect the well properly since the well was deep and it was dark. He soon informed the Fire Force and by the time they inspected the well, Anil had drowned. The body was fished out by the Fire Force. The incident has led to tension in the area as locals held the police responsible for the death. Police reinforcements have been rushed to the scene.
