Death threat to block officer

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA, APRIL 20. Naxal outfits have issued death threat to a block divisional officer in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

Achintya Mandal, a BDO in the Magrahat Block I area of the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency, received a letter containing the death threat issued by the Peoples' War and the Maoist Communist Centre.

The letter warned him of "dire consequences" if polls were held in the area.

A. Chandra, sub-divisional officer, Diamond Harbour, within whose jurisdiction Magrahat Block I falls, told The Hindu today that though the threat could be "a hoax, the local authorities were leaving nothing to chance."

Additional security forces had been sought for deployment in the 133 polling boothsin the block, he said.
