Ministry objects to construction in IIT, Powai
NEW DELHI,
APRIL 20.
The Human Resource Development Ministry has taken exception to the construction of two multi-crore ``luxurious'' hostel buildings in the IIT, Powai, without sanction.
``IIT, Powai, has not observed code formalities as required for such types of construction. Estimates were not prepared as per CPWD norms and specifications. Rather, the building has been planned to make it luxurious,'' the Ministry sources said.
It noted that Rs. 36.50 crores was spent on the construction of two hostel buildings with 532 rooms each and a cafeteria with a capacity to seat 1,500 when the government grant was Rs. 27.53 crores and the alumni of IIT, Powai, had provided Rs. 10.77 crores.
The Ministry observed that the built-up area per student came to around 24 square metres which seemed to be on a ``much higher side.
Normally 15 square metres, including the common area, is more than sufficient for a student for single occupancy.''
