Omar escapes bid on life

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR, APRIL 20. The National Conference president and former Union Minister, Omar Abdullah, today escaped an assassination bid when militants detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at Hayatpora in Budgam district.

Mr. Abdullah, who was on his way to Beerwah to address a public meeting, escaped unhurt.

Expressing serious concern over the way his security arrangements were being handled by the Jammu and Kashmir Government, Mr. Abdullah said, "We informed them 48 hours in advance and they made me cancel one meeting due to security reasons, but allowed me to go for the other and the SHO, Budgam, was escorting us." Still the blast took place and later the SHO, Beerwah, said it was not a safe route, he said. The police were paying attention to the security of the Chief Minister and ignoring the others, he alleged.
