Polling peaceful in three NE states

GUWAHATI, APRIL 20. Voting in the North-East was peaceful though violent incidents marred polling in Manipur, where ultras had given a boycott call. The region recorded a 50 per cent turnout.

In Manipur, while a polling official was kidnapped and election material, including electronic voting machines (EVMs) were destroyed by militants today, four security men were killed in poll-related violence yesterday.

Although, official sources have not yet confirmed the killing, the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack on Assam Rifles jawans and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) militants owned responsibility for the kidnapping. — UNI

Iboyaima Laithangbam reports from Imphal:

Polling for the Outer Manipur constituency reserved for tribals began on a dull note this morning amid a general strike called by the UNLF insurgents.

There was incredibly low turnout in many areas and there were virtually no election agents for the candidates in the eight Assembly segments of non-tribals in Thoubal and Imphal East districts.
