Thorpe thanks Stevens
SYDNEY: World record holder Ian Thorpe officially accepted an invitation from Australian head coach Leigh Nugent on Tuesday to swim the 400-metre freestyle at the Athens Olympics for Australia, ending a month-long saga that began with his being disqualified for a false start in qualifying.
On Monday, Thorpe's team-mate Craig Stevens announced his withdrawal from the event at Athens, giving the Sydney Olympic champion the chance to defend his title.
Stevens had qualified second behind Grant Hackett in the 400 in the Olympic trials at the Sydney Olympic pool on March 27 after Thorpe had been disqualified after falling into the water moments before his heat began.
"I'm pleased that I have the opportunity to swim this event at the Olympics and I'm grateful to Craig to have given me this opportunity," Thorpe said.
Less than 18 hours earlier, an announcement by Stevens on a national television current affairs show had made Thorpe's swim possible.
