Hantuchova advances

WARSAW, APRIL 28. Slovak Daniela Hantuchova rallied from dropping the first five games to beat Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3 to move into the second round of the J&S Cup on Tuesday. Eighth-seeded Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi of Israel easily beat Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian of Switzerland 6-3, 6-2 and Polish wild card Marta Domachowska overcame American qualifier Kristen Schlukebir 6-4, 6-0.

There were also wins for Vera Douchevina and Elena Bovina, of Russia. Douchevina beat Czech qualifier Kveta Peschke 7-5, 6-3, and Bovina rallied from a set and 3-1 down to overcome Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Schuettler beats Soderling

Top-seeded Rainer Schuettler advanced to the second round of the BMW Open beating Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-4, 7-6(5), while No. 2 Paradorn Srichaphan suffered his second straight first-round loss, beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Olivier Rochus.

Third-seeded Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic, the 2001 Munich champion, beat Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4, 6-2. Tommy Haas dispatched Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2.

Another German, Alexander Waske, ousted the 2001 Wimbledon champion, Goran Ivanisevic, 6-4, 7-6(0).

Kuerten tops Johansson

Gustavo Kuerten edged Thomas Johansson 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5) in a second-round battle between Grand Slam winners in the Open Seat Godo.

Also through to the third round were seventh-seeded Agustin Calleri and No. 8 Tommy Robredo.

Calleri, a semifinalist last year, beat Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-1, 7-6(7), while Robredo was a step closer to his fifth quarterfinal of the season when he downed Karol Beck of Slovakia 6-4, 6-4.

Mandula progresses

Hometown favourites Petra Mandula and Aniko Kapros pleased fans with straight-set wins in the first round of the Budapest Grand Prix.

Second-seeded Mandula defeated Virginie Razzano of France, 6-4, 6-0, while No. 3 Kapros downed Croatia's Silvija Talaja 6-3, 6-4.
