Poor show by Indians

NEW DELHI, APRIL 28. Deepali Deshpande shot a 571 out of 600 in finishing joint 37th in the women's sport rifle 3-position event in the shooting World Cup in Athens on Wednesday.

Deepali, who has a national record 584 to her credit in this event, had rounds of 199 in prone, 190 in standing and 182 in kneeling. Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat was not at her best this time finishing a joint 43rd with a 569, following rounds of 193, 191 and 185. Suma Shirur was joint 51st with a 567 following 190 in prone and kneeling and a 187 in standing.

Tatiana Goldobina of Russia took the gold with a 681.5 as she shot a 99.5 following a 582. Lioubov Galkina of Russia pipped Natalia Kalnish of Ukraine 10.4 to 9.7 in the shoot-off for the silver, after the two had tied at 681.2.

In the women's skeet event, Arti Singh was joint 24th with a 55 out of 75, following rounds of 20, 18 and 17.

Ning Wei of China took the gold with 86 out of 100, while Veronique Girardet Allard of France pipped Zemfira Meftakhetdinova of Azerbaijan and Olga Panarina of Russia to the silver in the shoot-off after the three players tied at 85. The Olympic champion, Zemfira managed to cling on to the bronze eventually.

In the men's free pistol event, Ronak Pandit was joint 26th with a 551 out of 600. He had rounds of 92, 90, 91, 91, 94 and 93.

Mikhail Nestruev of Russia won the gold with a 664.4 as he shot a 99.4 in the final after a 565. Boris Kokorev took the silver with a 663.0, while Zongliang Tan of China who had a 567 in the preliminary phase could muster only a 94.3 in the final and took the bronze at 661.3.
