ECB member quits

LONDON, APRIL 28. A senior England Cricket Board (ECB) member has resigned over the proposed tour to Zimbabwe later this year.

Des Wilson resigned from the ECB's corporate affairs and marketing advisory committee late on Tuesday. He was appointed to formulate a policy for England's tour to Zimbabwe in October, but failed to persuade enough members of the board to take a more aggressive stance over the tour and the regime of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.

``I really thought I could make some difference,'' Wilson was quoted as saying in the several British broadsheet newspapers on Wednesday.

``They liked the idea of someone coming in with fresh ideas but the trouble is that when it comes to putting them into action, they don't like the reality.''

Wilson said the differences between himself and the ECB were ``profound'' and he decided to leave.

The ECB, threatened by a US$2 million fine and even suspension if it does not tour, met with the Zimbabwe Cricket Union on April 20 in London.

The decision on touring was postponed until at least May 4.— AP
