Basketball
BANGALORE, APRIL 28. Vivekananda (Mandya) ended DRDO's dream run in the State sub-junior basketball championship at the Sree Kanteerva Stadium courts here on Wednesday, with a 42-18 win, setting up the title clash with Davangere's Merchants. Merchants were 59-17 winners over Vijayanagar (Hospet). Merchants, with Pavan and Sharath in good nick, ran up a 29-8 lead at the halfway stage, with 20 of those points coming in the second quarter. In the third and fourth quarters the Davangere side maintained its momentum to post a comfortable win. DRDO matched Vivekananda in the first quarter and led 7-4, with Vipin accounting for all of his team's points. In the second session too the teams were neck-and-neck although the Mandya team enjoyed a slight 17-13 advantage. But a poor third quarter combination in the DRDO ranks spelt doom and Vivekananda tallied 20 points in this period to take the match away. And with the tall Rakshith and Sujanapriya, along with Arvind, keeping DRDO scoring machine in check, there was little the rest could do. In the girls' section, Beagles won a tough match against the K.S. Hegde girls. Despite leading 11-3 at halftime, Beagles was made to earn its victory with Ramya and Pallavi starring for the Mangalore team. Keerthana however carried her team through with some intelligent play. In the second semifinal, Vivek SC were too superior to V.N. Sports Club and won easily.
