BANGALORE, MAY 1. Workers in the unorganised sector should be organised into a strong, dynamic force that could work for improving their living standards and quality of life, M. Krishnappa, MLC and Congress candidate for the Bangalore South Lok Sabha Constituency, said here today. Inaugurating the May Day celebrations of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Labour Cell, Mr. Krishnappa said workers in the hotel industry, tea and rubber estates and other sectors were working without even the basic facilities or minimum wages. Often the workplace was not safe, and there were no health and medical benefits. Thanks to globalisation and privatisation, many industries had closed down and this had rendered thousands of workers jobless, he said.
Assurance
Our Special Correspondent writes: The Secretary General of the Janata Dal (S), P.G.R. Sindhia, today assured the working class that the JD(S) was in favour of protecting the interests of the workers, unlike the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which, according to him, were more interested in privatisation and globalisation. Presiding over the May Day celebrations at the party headquarters here, he said that while the JD(S) was not against globalisation and liberalisation, it wanted measures introduced to take care of the working class. It was this aspect that had prompted the JD(S) to have an understanding with the Left parties.
