NEW DELHI, MAY 4. The Congress candidate from East Delhi, Sandeep Dikshit, today complained to the Election Commission that the police were harassing a large number of party workers in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls on May 10. A written complaint in this regard was submitted to the Election Commission today by Mr. Dikshit's election agent, Romila Dhawan. She alleged that the Congress workers were now being booked under the Indian Panel Code on frivolous grounds. "By acting in such a partisan manner, the police were infringing upon the fundamental rights of citizens. This is clearly an attempt to harass and malign the Congress workers and try to refrain them in participating in the election process," the letter said. "Most of the persons booked by the police are from the poor strata of society and can not even arrange for their sureties. This is a calculated move at the behest of some vested interests," Ms. Dhawan said, urging the Commission to ensure that this harassment was brought to an end.
