Sonia rally schedule upsets partymen

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 4. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, would end the election campaign for the Lok Sabha polls by addressing a big rally at the Ramlila Grounds in the Capital on May 8. However, the decision to postpone the rally to the last day of campaigning has not gone down well with the contesting party candidates who have expressed displeasure at the manner in which the AICC has reshuffled the programme of Ms. Gandhi.

In fact, Ms. Gandhi was first scheduled to address a public meeting in the Capital on May 7. However, this was changed to May 6 as Ms. Gandhi had a prior engagement in Chennai and was unable to fit Delhi in her schedule. So late last night, the AICC decided to hold the rally on May 8, the day campaigning for the fifth and last phase of the Lok Sabha polls comes to a close. It is understood that Ms. Gandhi would be arriving at the venue around 4 p.m.

Although the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee and local party leaders have been directed to mobilise support for the rally, the contesting candidates are unhappy with the date of the rally. In fact, the last day of the campaign is the day all the contesting candidates indulge in show of strength in their respective constituencies. "The candidates take out huge processions throughout the constituency in order to make a last attempt to garner support from the electorate. It is a time when all the active party workers and supporters of the candidate join hands to put up a united front in order to send a forceful impression across the constituency. All the party workers are actively engaged in this exercise and with the decision to hold the rally on the last day, it would become extremely difficult for the candidates to coordinate activities for two parallel shows. We will face a lot of problems. The AICC has overlooked our problems,'' remarked a Congress candidate.
