A not so grand finale for Fashion Week

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, MAY 4. It was a "fruity'' end to India's most fashionable week here as the curtains fell at the Grand finale of the Lakme India Fashion Week yesterday. And even as the week of glamour and hopefully, business, ended here today, some felt the show "was not grand enough for a finale''. Starting off fashionably late, the evening saw three designers -- Anshu Arora Sen, Aki Narula and Anamika Khanna - creatively interpret Lakme's statement for the season, "Fruit Shock''. While Anshu worked with the theme of "Pop'', Aki concentrated on "Crush'' and Anamika played around with "Burst''. A riot of colours - inspired by the theme - the ramp saw some innovations in terms of silhouettes and cuts. A lot of pink and candyfloss look, designer Anshu described her collection as funky. "It's a very joyful, happy collection, with lots of happy colours. It's very feminine but also there are a lot of contradictions. I have tried to stress on people's individuality. It's not about what is "in'' internationally but my emphasis is on the person's personality. That's why I brought in twins on the ramp. Though they are not identical, I dressed them up almost in the same way to emphasis the importance of individuality,'' says Anshu. While Anamika portrayed a more "relaxed'' collection, for Aki, the line was "like a crush on your head''. For Lakme, the collection was aimed at a much more younger and more energetic look as compared to the previous years. "In the past, the finale look has been very couture. But this time, as we are looking at summer, we wanted something younger, more vivacious and sporty. So the theme fits in very well,'' said business head, Lakme Lever, Anil Chopra. Clothes apart, the highlight of the show were the Lakme faces. While Indrani Dasgupta has been walking the ramp during the week, actress Katrina Kaif and Yana Gupta were also on the ramp for the grand finale. However, most of the audience came out disappointed. "They said something about the show being dramatic and unexpected. But where was that? It was definitely not for a grand finale,'' said someone from the audience.
