Weather

Maximum temperature recorded at the Gannavaram Airport was 34.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum was 25.9 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity which was 83 per cent slipped to 65 per cent towards evening.

Commodity prices

Following were the prices (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Friday: Groundnut oil-54.50, palmolein oil-46.25, sunflower oil-53, tamarind (flower variety)-26 to 33, tamarind (Karipuli variety)-33 to 42, chillis-14 to 22, rice (2716)-12, rice (superfine)-13 to 14, rice (samba masoori)-15, black gram-17.50 to 21 and red gram-27 to 30.50.

`Housing Mela'

The Indian Overseas Bank is organising a `housing mela' on May 8 and 9 at the Nalanda Degree College on the MG Road at Vijayawada and Sri Shankar Conference Hall, Brodipet, Guntur between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. According to the bank's deputy chief officer, M. Basavaiah, besides offering "in principle'' sanction of loans, there will be waiver of processing charges, guarantee and additional security requirements during the two-day mela. The bank, he said, would also take over housing loans of other banks and institutions. Prospective loanees would be subjected to only bare minimal documentation, he said.

Talk on diabetes

The Rotary Club of Vijayawada is organising a talk on "Diabetic complications-prevention'' by the former medical officer, endocrinology of the Nizams's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), G.V.R.Murthhi at the Rotary Children's Auditorium here on May 10, at 6.30 p.m. Dr. Murthhi would explain at length the preventive and propalytic measures to combat the disease.

Vidyut Adalat

A Vidyut Adalat would be conducted on May 8 at the office of the divisional electrical engineer, operation town, Vijayawada, near the PWD grounds from 11 a.m. Issues pertaining to defective adjustment bills wrong meter readings, replacement of meters, voltage problems, release of new connections, damaged poles, interruption of power supply will be dealt at the meeting. The current consumption charges of Vijayawada city, Kankipadu, Penamaluru, Gannavaram and Vijayawada rural will be collected on May 8 despite the day being a second Saturday. The revenue collection counters will remain open between 8 a.m and 12 noon during the day, according to the divisional electrical engineer, operation, Vijayawada.
