VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 8. Andhra University has reportedly terminated the services of one of its associate professors, Pinniti Varalakshmi, who was a member of the dissolved Assembly. Neither Dr. Varalakshmi nor any university official was available to confirm or deny the report. She had gone on a tour to Hyderabad and would return only on May 15, her family members said. Dr. Varalakshmi, who went on leave after the Assembly was dissolved, reported back to duty following notices sent to her by the university. The decision to sack her was reportedly taken during the last meeting of the AU Executive Council. In recent past, the university had sacked four teachers, Babayya, S. Surappadu, Vasudeva Rao and John, on different grounds, while a former Rajya Sabha member, Y. Lakshmi Prasad, had been served show-cause notices on two charges. An associate professor of the AU College of Engineering, K. Haribabu, and a junior assistant, Sobha Hymavathi, who were elected to the Assembly last time, along with Dr. Varalakshmi, were also served notices in the past. While Dr. Haribabu applied for voluntary retirement, Ms. Hymavathi did not respond to the notices and it was presumed that she had decided to forgo the campus job. Both of them contested the Assembly election this time also, while Dr. Varalakshmi could not get her party's ticket.
