TRS support to NDA?

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MAY 8. Even as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has decided to organise a camp with its newly elected members to the State Assembly soon after declaration of results to plan strategy, there is speculation in the party circles whether it will also support the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.

The opinion on support to the NDA within the TRS is said to be divided between its president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, and senior leader, A. Narendra. The latter was reportedly in favour of supporting the NDA Government as it was only under the NDA rule that the States of Uttaranchal, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were formed and therefore the Telangana could be a reality if the NDA continued in power.

Mr. Rao, however, did not agree on extending support to the NDA on moral grounds because the TRS fought the election in alliance with the Congress. With the two senior leaders adopting opposite stands, the TRS leaders saw little choice for unanimity between them.

The camp to be held at a star hotel here in the wake of declaration of results was reportedly aimed at planning a strategy to enhance its bargaining power with the Congress. The TRS will mount pressure on the Congress to concede to its demands, mainly take steps for statehood to Telangana.

Mr. Rao on Saturday also held discussions with some senior party leaders on the strategy.
