THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 15. The need to popularise eco-friendly farming methods with a view to launching a new agricultural revolution in the State was stressed at a seminar on rainwater harvesting and terrace vegetable cultivation here today. Inaugurating the seminar, organised by the Indian Agricultural Association (IAA), the director of the State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications, Vellayani Arjunan, said the need of the hour was to popularise modern trends in agriculture such as rainwater harvesting and terrace cultivation in view of the severe water shortage in the State. Though agriculture was the backbone of the country, not much importance is being given to new agricultural methods. He appealed to voluntary agencies and likeminded organisations to join hands for the popularisation of modern trends in agriculture. Technical sessions on rainwater harvesting, terrace farming and merits of using organic fertilizers were also discussed in the seminar. The former director of the Agriculture Department, L. Sundaresan, the IAA vice-president, S. Sivaprasad, and the general secretary, S. K. Suresh also spoke.
