NEW DELHI, MAY 17. The outgoing Union Tourism and Culture Minister, Jagmohan, said today his mission to give a ``reborn look'' to national monuments in such places as Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, Hampi in Karnataka, Nalanda in Bihar and several others would remain unfulfilled. ``But I have always believed that it is better to have attempted and lost than to have not attempted at all,'' he told reporters here. Known for his no-nonsense, straight forward approach and development initiatives, Mr. Jagmohan expressed the hope that the new government at the Centre would continue to take steps to beautify and preserve national monuments, highlighting the great Indian civilisation. Mr. Jagmohan, who lost to Ajay Maken of the Congress from the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency after winning three terms, said he would devote his time to penning his memoirs and writing books. Describing all the 30 developmental projects undertaken by him during his two-year tenure as the Culture Minister as his ``favourites,'' he regretted that the Yamuna river cleaning-cum-beautification project could not be completed. Asked if his drive to remove slum clusters from the Yamuna river bank was one of the factors for his defeat, he said it had ``cost him in one way.'' However, he asserted that his aim was not to ``dislodge or make anyone shelterless but to relocate them.''
