Respect people's mandate, Mahila Congress tells BJP

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, MAY 17. The All-India Mahila Congress today demanded that the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders respect the "people's mandate'' and put an end to their "senseless utterances'' against the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi. In a statement issued here, the Mahila Congress president, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, said: "It was unfortunate that the attack is being led by a woman Chief Minister [Uma Bharti] and a woman ex-minister [Sushma Swaraj]."

Referring to the Supreme Court judgment that "put an end to all controversies relating to her foreign origin," Ms. Bahuguna said that despite such a clear verdict in this issue, the BJP continues with its senseless tirade and "is using their women leadership to lead it." About the National Democratic Alliance's decision to boycott the swearing-in ceremony of Ms. Gandhi as Prime Minister with the backing of two-thirds of the members of the Lok Sabha, the Mahila Congress president described the move as a reflection of their frustration.
