Maharashtra BJP has no protest plan
By Our Special Correspondent
MUMBAI,
MAY 17.
The Maharashtra BJP has no plan to oppose the Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi, becoming the Prime Minister.
The State BJP president, Gopinath Munde, told mediapersons here today that the party had not launched any agitation or issued direction to the State unit in this regard. But personally he opposed a person of foreign origin holding such high office.
The State unit held a meeting here to evaluate the performance of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in the State in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Munde said that though the BJP seats from Maharashtra fell from 27 to 25, the party was satisfied with the outcome in view of the setback suffered nationwide.
But the saffron alliance had faced defeat in most of the urban centres in the State because it lost its traditional constituency of the urban middle class. He attributed the disaffection to unemployment, voluntary retirement schemes and lower interest rates.
