Bid to rob gold from airport warehouse foiled
LONDON,
MAY 17.
Police foiled an attempt by a gang today to steal gold bullion worth £40 million ($70 million) and cash from a warehouse at Heathrow Airport, London's Metropolitan Police said.
The gang smashed through the shutters of the Swissport Cargo warehouse in a white van before threatening the staff with knives, cudgels and firearm. Over 100 officers, who were lying in wait, arrested six men after disabling the van. Two other suspects escaped in another vehicle, but one was arrested later.
No shots were fired during the operation on the outskirts of the airport and none of the warehouse staff was injured. One police officer was slightly injured. The gang had been attempting to steal a large quantity of gold that had been delivered to the warehouse and enter a secure area containing a large quantity of bank notes.
``In preventing this attack, we have foiled what would have been one of the biggest robberies ever committed in the United Kingdom,'' said Detective Superintendent Barry Phillips of the force's Flying Squad, which targets armed robbery.
He said the would-be thieves ``knew where the gold bullion was located inside the premises and went straight for it.''
