Putin calls up Vajpayee

NEW DELHI, MAY 25. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, today telephoned the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and thanked him for his friendship and cooperation in taking Indo-Russian relations forward.

Ashok Tandon, spokesman for Mr. Vajpayee, told this correspondent that the Russian leader expressed "deep appreciation" for the former Prime Minister's personal contribution towards strengthening Indo-Russian relations.

Mr. Vajpayee, in turn, conveyed to Mr. Putin his appreciation for the Russian President's personal support in strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Russia. The former Prime Minister expressed the hope that this process would continue. According to Mr. Tandon, the former Prime Minister had also received a letter from the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Several other leaders have also written to Mr. Vajpayee, he said.
