ELISTA, MAY 27 . Koneru Humpy's flirted with danger and paid the penalty against Tatiana Kosintseva in their second match of the Women's World chess championship pre-quarterfinals here on Thursday. Humpy needed only a draw with white pieces to advance to the quarterfinals but her early adventure backfired and resulted in a 78-move defeat. The winner will now be decided in the rapid tie-breaker matches scheduled later in the evening. Third seed and former holder Maia Chiburdanidze, World junior girls champion Nana Dzagnidze, both of Georgia, and China's Yu Yuhua were among those who made the quarterfinals. Ukraine's 14-year-old Kateryna Lahno, seeded five, hit back with white to beat Russia's Ekaterina Kovalevskaya and forced the tie-break games. Humpy accepted Tatiana's offer of a central pawn on the eighth move and also managed to dislodge the rival king from its starting block. This suited Tatiana who seized the initiative by claiming the king-pawn on the 15th move. Tatiana's better-positioned pieces gave her the edge and thereafter, the top seed remained on the defensive. After further simplification, Tatiana cleaned up two kingside pawns. Eventually, Tatiana's rook, bishop and two pawns proved superior to Humpy's rook and knight.
