Barreto free to sign for Penang FC, says FIFA
KOLKATA,
MAY 27.
Football's world governing body FIFA put an end to the long controversy over Mohun Bagan's renegade Brazilian striker, Jose Barreto, saying that the player was free to sign for Malaysian club Penang FC in the new season.
With Bagan announcing a year-long ban on the Brazilian who quit mid-season over differences with the club administration early in January, the All India Football Federation withheld the player's request for an international release certificate.
With Barreto appealing to FIFA to resolve the issue, it sought clarification from the National body and ordered AIFF to release the player.
The world body apparently took into consideration the ban imposed by the previous club and said that Barreto's contract with Bagan expired in March 2004 and he was free to take up a new assignment.
While acceding to the FIFA order on releasing Barreto, AIFF, meanwhile, has repeated its query to the world body about the status of the ban. Our Sports Reporter
