CHENNAI, MAY 29. Ongoing gauge conversion works in the State will be expedited for completion in the next five years, R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways, said today. "Priority will be given to the Madurai-Manamadurai-Rameswaram and Tiruchi-Manamadurai sections to bring the pilgrim town of Rameswaram on the broad gauge map. In the first phase, the Madurai-Manamadurai section will be converted," he told newsmen here. V. Anand, Southern Railway General Manager, who was present, said the administration studied various alternatives for replacing the Pamban (metre gauge) bridge linking Mandapam and Rameswaram, including provision of a tunnel and a high-level bridge. As they were cost-prohibitive, it proposed to lay a broad gauge bridge at the same level of the existing one. The proposal was sent to the Railway Board. Referring to main line conversion (Villupuram-Thanjavur), the Minister said this year the Kumbakonam-Mayiladuturai section would be completed. Under the Virudhunagar-Tenkasi-Kollam conversion project, work was over up to Tenkasi and BG services would soon be introduced to Tenkasi from Virudhunagar. In the next phase, the Kollam-Punalur section would be taken up. Other projects including the Thanjavur-Nagore-Karaikal and Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur BG lines and the Madurai-Dindigul additional BG line would be given due priority.
Additional coaches, a
permanent feature
Following good passenger response to introduction additional coaches in some major trains such as the Vaigai, Pallavan and Kovai expresses this summer season, the administration decided to regularise the arrangement. Totally two AC three-tier, 10 sleeper class and eight second class chair coaches were added to 10 BG trains and four sleeper coaches to two metre gauge trains to clear the extra rush of passengers. These additional coaches would become a permanent feature, the Minister said. In the last financial year Rs 20.05 crores was spent on passenger amenities in the zone. In the current year more funds would be allotted to provide basic facilities at all stations, he said.
