CHENNAI MAY 29. The following police officers have been posted as Superintendents of Police: K. Periaiah, Villupuram; S. Rajendran, Dharmapuri; M. Kandasamy, Dindigul; K. Premkumar, Kancheepuram; T. Sundaresan, Madurai; S. Davidson Devasirvatham, Karur; R. Arumugam, Pudukottai; Anand Kumar Somani, Sivaganga; Maheshwar Dayal, Nilgiris; S. Baskaran, Tiruvarur; P. Thamaraikannan, Tiruchi and S. Jeyachandran, Virudhunagar. Three Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), Sonal Misra, Prem Anand Sinha and Anisa Husain, have been posted as ASPs Prohibition Enforcement Wing in Krishnagiri, Tiruchi and Tiruvallur.
Boy dies of diarrhoea
ERODE MAY 29. A 2 1/2-year-old boy of Surampatty, a suburb of Erode, died of acute diarrhoea today. Vinodh, who was staying with his grandmother at Vallipurathampalayam, near Thindal here, had developed severe diarrhoea since last night and was admitted to a private nursing home this morning. As his condition worsened, he was taken to the Government Headquarters Hospital here. But he died on the way. His parents suspect that the child died of cholera, but hospital authorities are denying the claim. However, they said, stools samples would be sent to the King Institute, Chennai, for testing. Meanwhile, 20 children from Surampatty and other areas of Erode were admitted to the Government Headquarters Hospital for diarrhoea.
VILLUPURAM MAY 29. The railway police intensified track patrolling and beefed up security in stations following a threatening letter received yesterday by the Villupuram Station Master from the banned Thamizhar Viduthalai Iyakkam. The letter said if the Iyakkam leader, Suba Ilavarasan, and his aide, Sahadevan, who were arrested on Wednesday, were not released within a fortnight, railway stations or tracks at Villupuram, Cuddalore and Tiruchi would be blown up by planting bombs. On a complaint by railway officials, dog squads had been pressed into service.
Policeman killed in hit-and-run
KRISHNAGIRI MAY 29. A head constable attached to the Krishnagiri taluk police and prohibition enforcement wing was killed in a hit-and-run accident on the Bangalore Road here on Friday. According to the police, Joseph (40) was on his way to investigate a case when the incident occurred. The police are searching for the unidentified vehicle.
Invited for Vienna meet
CHENNAI MAY 29. A city-based neurologist and neuropsychiatrist, E.S. Krishnamoorthy, has been invited for the European Epilepsy Congress in Vienna. The meet begins on May 30 and ends on June 4. Dr. Krishnamoorthy is an international expert in epilepsy and behaviour, and represents developing nations on various commissions of the International League Against Epilepsy, a global body committed to epilepsy care and research. He has 50 international publications to his credit and serves as honorary visiting professor in clinical neurosciences in Madras University.
Education over phone
COIMBATORE MAY 29. The Alagappa University has introduced a new concept education over phone. This facilitates students to avail themselves of all services relating to education on their doorstep. According to a release, besides students, office-goers, housewives and those unable to visit the university in person, can make use of this opportunity. The university is offering a two-year MBA course and there is no need to appear for the entrance examination. From this year, the course is available in Tamil medium also. New courses introduced in this academic year include M.A (Hospital Administration) and PG diploma in Hospital Administration through distance education programmes. Ornaments, cash looted
Nagercoil May 29. The police are on the look-out for some unidentified persons who lifted 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs.3500 in cash from a house on Friday. According to the police, Jeyanthi, daughter of Soosai of Simon Colony, went to a marriage hall to participate in her sister's marriage, when some unidentified persons gained entry into her father's house through backyard and decamped with 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs.3,500 in cash kept in a suitcase. The police have registered a case and are investigating.
BSNL issues SIM cards
Nagercoil May 29. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited today started issuing pre-paid Subscriber Identity Module cards to those, who had already registered their names at customer care centre, the General Manager, P.V. Vijaya Kumaran, said. In a release, he said that for obtaining the cards, the subscribers had to bring the waiting list slips issued by the authority concerned and also to remit the cash payment of Rs. 200. Those subscribers, who were not able to come in person, might send their authorised representatives along with an authorisation letter. It was also decided to issue starter pack SIM cards to subscribers up to the waiting list serial number 419.
One killed, three hurt
Nagercoil May 29. An aged woman was killed on the spot and three others sustained injuries in an accident on Saturday. According to the police, Padmavathy (65) of Chekkala Street near Eraneil was crossing the road, when a van dashed against her, killing her on the spot. The van turned overturned when the driver lost control. Devasakayam (65), Gopi (48) and Mariya Raj (70), who were travelling in the van, sustained injuries. Later they were rushed to the Government Hospital.
Struck dead by lightning
PERAMBALUR MAY 29 . A 21-year-old agricultural labourer, P. Ramachandran, was charred to death this afternoon, when he was struck by a lightning. The police said the accident occurred at a field at Brahmmadesam near Veppanthattai where the youth was tending the cows. He died on the spot. Heavy rain battered parts of Veppanthattai and surrounding villages.
Special buses
TIRUCHI MAY 29. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will operate special buses, from different parts of Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur districts, on June 2, for the benefit of the devotees attending the Pournami Girivalam festival, at Sri Arunachaleshwara temple, in Tiruvannamalai, on June 2 and 3. The buses will be operated from the early hours of June 2 from Tiruchi, Karur, Musiri, Thuraiyur, Perambalur, Thuvaramkurichi, Ariyalur, Manapparai and Jayamkondam towns. Buses would also be operated on the respective return routes, a release of the TNSTC said.
Music school admission
PUDUKOTTAI MAY 29. Admission of students for 2004-05 in the Government Music School here is going on in the district. Students should have passed VII Standard for getting admitted to vocal music and bharathanatyam classes, while being a literate is enough for getting admitted to nadhaswaram, thavil and thevaram classes. An release here today said students in the age group of 12-25 years are eligible for the three-year courses and the fees is Rs. 152 per year.
Specialised treatment
ERODE MAY 29 . A 15-day heart diseases treatment camp would be held at the Apollo Idyayam Hospitals, according to its chairman, D. Kandasamy. During the camp, Angiogram, Angioplasty and Bypass surgery would be performed at a subsidised charge. Free surgeries would also be done during the camp. The hospital will also organise talk shows for the benefit of the public from June1-15.
Seized
ERODE MAY 29. The Erode Municipal Health officials during a raid seized 750 water packets and water bottles and 15 bottles of soft drinks whose date expired at the Erode Municipal bus stand and surrounding areas. The Health departmental official urged the public not to use the expiry-dated soft drinks and protected drinking water.
Killed
Krishnagiri May 29. A 45-year-old man was struck dead by lightning following heavy rains at Sennapalli here on Friday. Police said Pachaiappa was returning home from Soolagiri when the incident occurred. The Soolagiri police have registered a case.
