This Day That Age
The Pakistan Governor-General, Mr. Ghulam Mohammed, on May 30 dismissed the Fazlul Huq Ministry of East Bengal and imposed Governor's rule on the province. Mr. Fazlul Huq had left Karachi only on the morning of May 30 for Dacca after week-long stormy conferences with the Central Government over constitutional and other matters, including the recent jute mill riots in East Bengal. Mr. Huq, who is head of the United Front, came into power in April this year after inflicting a crushing defeat in the East Bengal general elections on the ruling Muslim League Party. This was the first non-Muslim League Ministry in Pakistan. Soon after Mr. Fazlul Huq took office, there were riots in East Pakistan in jute and paper mills, in which over 500 people were killed. The Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr. Mohammed Ali, said these riots were inspired by Communists, but Mr. Huq said Mr. Mohammed Ali's statement was "fantastic." Major-General Iskandar Mirza, Pakistan's Defence Secretary, who arrived in Dacca from Karachi on May 30 in the same plane as Mr. Fazlul Huq, will be sworn in as Governor of East Pakistan in place of Chaudhri Kaliquzzaman, it is learnt.
