NEW DELHI, JUNE 4 . The World Bank has agreed to provide $500 millions for the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) that is aimed at universalising elementary education by the end of this decade. An agreement to this effect was signed here by the Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ranjit Bannerji, and the Country Director of World Bank, Michael Carter. The total expenditure on SSA for the four-year period beginning 2003 fiscal is estimated to be in the vicinity of $3.5 billion. Apart from the World Bank assistance SSA has got a $300 million grant from DFID and another $200 million grant from the European Commission. These grants supplement the domestic resources of $2.5 billion from both the Central and State Governments. Through SSA, the Government hopes to achieve universal enrolment and universalise elementary education of children in the six-to-14 age-group by 2010. Other goals include reducing the number of out-of-school children by at least nine million by June 2007, bridge the gender and social gaps, and enhance the quality of education.
