MYSORE, JUNE 5. Many programmes were held in Mysore to mark World Environment Day on Saturday, underlining the growing ecological awareness among a large section of the people.

Though dismissed as "another passing fad" a few years ago, the importance of environmental conservation has percolated to all sections of society as evident in today's programmes.

The Mysore Agenda Task Force launched a drive to plant over 2,000 saplings to increase the green cover of the city. The focus was on the densely populated Santhepet area, where there are no trees as a result of which the pollution level is high.

Kumar G. Naik, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling. M.V. Venkatraju, former Chairman of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, H.R. Bapusatyanarayana, a member of the task force, and Shakeeb-Ur-Rehman, in-charge principal of SJCE, Mysore, were present.

The Centre for Appropriate Rural Technologies (CART) also organised a similar programme at the Manasagangotri High School and 90 saplings of 15 species were planted on the school campus.

Children performed a skit titled "Plastic Rakshasa" to spread awareness about the environmental hazards posed by plastic. CART plans to extend the CLEAN-Mysore programme that entails children's participation in conservation issues.

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens was the venue for a unique programme in which physically challenged and special children took part in a drawing and a painting competition to mark World Environment Day. About 40 children participated in the programme.

A programme to plant saplings was also launched by the zoo authorities. The Chairperson of the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, Susheela Keshavmurthy, inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling.

About 30 saplings of various species were planted by special children near the butterfly park at Karanji.

A special programme was also arranged to create awareness among children and the people about each individual's role in environmental protection and conservation.

About 300 students and 50 staff members of Mysore Public School took an oath to protect the environment and the authorities held a special programme to underline the importance of planting, protecting, and nurturing trees. Each student took a pledge to plant at least one tree every year.

M. Ramachandran, principal of the school, spoke of the importance of environmental conservation and exhorted students to commit themselves for a greener and a cleaner world. An on-the-spot painting and drawing competition was held and 60 students participated in it.

Students of JSS Girls' High School and Kukkarahalli Higher Secondary School took out rallies to underline the importance of environmental conservation.
