Kerala HC orders Railways to cut fare

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JUNE 7. The Kerala High Court has directed Southern Railway to reduce the fare between Cannanore and Mangalore for the 6329/6330 Malabar Express.

Delivering the judgment on a public interest litigation petition filed by Gerison George of Mangalore, Justice C.N. Ramachandran directed the Railways to reduce the fare between the two stations as the train ran as a shuttle between Cannanore and Mangalore, stopping at 16 stations.

According to Mr. George, the judge observed: "On account of the stoppage of train at all stations, the running time is substantially more and so much so, there is discomfort and inconvenience to passengers. Therefore, the Railways has to necessarily reduce the rate applicable for journeys beyond Cannanore till the destination. Charges can be levied for reserved passengers up to Cannanore at the rate applicable to express trains. But beyond that, they have to be charged only the rate applicable for reserved journey in a passenger train."
