HYDERABAD, JUNE 8. The Sanathnagar MLA and former Minister, M. Shashidhar Reddy, has asked officials of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH) to take up desilting and cleaning of nalas and stormwater drains on a war footing in view of the impending monsoon season. Mr. Reddy, who made a representation to the Additional Commissioner, Secunderabad zone, V. Rajeshwar Rao, on Tuesday, said that most of the nalas and drains were clogged and construction debris and garbage were getting accumulated impeding the flow of water. When officials explained that the Irrigation Department had done a survey and identified the bottlenecks and encroachments near nalas, Mr. Reddy said the corporation could at least take up works where there were no such problems. He promised cooperation in removing encroachments coming under his constituency. The problem of sewer lines linked to stormwater drains too should be taken care of, he said. Mr. Reddy explained that he had taken up construction of retaining wall across the Kukatpally nala that passes under the Begumpet flyover with the help of MP funds five years back and nothing had improved since then. Since the nala is near the airport, the Airport Authority of India can also be roped in to contribute towards cleaning it. Mr. Reddy expressed his strong opposition to debris being dumped into the Hussainsagar lake for laying a road from Pathigada to the Minister's Road. The lake area should be protected and nothing done to shrink it further, he said.
