MUMBAI, JUNE 13. As security agencies interrogated Akhtar Hussain Qutbuddin Ahmed, deported from Dubai for allegedly offering to sell Indian nuclear secrets to some Arab countries, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre today began probing if he has any links with any of its scientists. Mr. Akhtar, who was detained immediately after he landed in Mumbai, was being questioned at the Sahar International Airport by various security and intelligence agencies to establish his proximity to any official concerned with atomic energy, official sources said. They said the UAE authorities had been approached through the diplomatic channels to provide relevant information about Mr. Akhtar's activities, including details of the nuclear secret documents that he was allegedly trying to sell. Although Dubai Police claimed that Mr. Akhtar had said that his brother was working as a scientist with an Indian nuclear agency, he had not corroborated this during the questioning so far, the sources said. BARC was scanning the list of its employees to ascertain if any nuclear scientist had any links with Mr. Akhtar, according to its spokesperson. A report from Dubai, quoting the Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, Lt.-Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, said Mr. Akhtar was arrested there after two years of intense surveillance, Lt. Gen. Tamim told a news conference on Saturday that Mr. Akhtar made his first move in the 1990s and had tried to contact the UAE Ambassador to India for the purpose. PTI, UNI
