This Day That Age
M. Pierre Mendes-France, the French Left-wing radical, who advocates closer economic links between Britain and France, accepted on June 14 President Coty's invitation to form a Government. M. Mendes-France has often called for an end to the Indo-China war. It was on the conduct of the Indo-China war that the Government of M. Joseph Laniel fell earlier this week. The chief critic of Foreign Minister Georges Bidault's handling of the Geneva conference, M. Mendes-France, aged 47, was an unsuccessful candidate for the Premiership last year. He has called for reforms in French overseas territories, claiming that "the 19th century colonial regime has had its day", and recently declared that "new men and methods" were needed.
