This Day That Age
Civil aviation in India entered a new phase during the second half of 1953 when, under the Air Corporation's Act, 1953, the air transport industry was nationalised and two Corporations - the Indian Airlines and Air India International - came into being. Another notable development was the commencement of a direct air service between Delhi and Kabul. There was a slight fall in the number of passengers and scheduled services during the period as compared with the previous half-year. The scheduled services during July to December 1953 covered an unduplicated route mileage of 27,046. About 9.6 million miles were flown on these services and 190,315 passengers, 40.7 million lbs. of freight and 4.5 million lbs. of mails were carried.
