Red Cross marks blood donors day

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 14. The Pondicherry branch of Indian Red Cross Society organised special events to mark World Blood Donors Day and the birth anniversary of Dr. Karl Landsteiner.

An elocution competition on `voluntary blood donation' was held as a prelude to the celebrations on June 12, with the Director of Health and Family Welfare Services G. Subramanyam Reddy chairing the event.

Students from medical colleges here participated and prizes were distributed to the winners.

Awareness programmes on blood donation for the rural and urban youth were also held at Kalapet, Katterikuppam, Kosapalayam and Villianoor, which attracted a sizeable audience.

Blood donation camps were also held at the blood banks at the Government General Hospital and at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). Angeline Lazarus, the National Naval Medical Centre, Bethesda (USA) delegate, inaugurated the camp in the hospital. JIPMER Director, Subba Rao, addressed a meeting today.
