Yanam to become `hut free' town

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, JUNE 14. Malladi Krishna Rao, Independent MLA from Yanam region (situated in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh), today said that preliminary work on the construction of an indoor stadium at the G M Balayogi Sports Complex at Yanam was being completed.

He told The Hindu here today that the Rs 5.55-crore stadium would come up on 2.5 acres. The structure is coming up in line with international standards. Tenders would be finalised soon to start the work although the foundation had been laid.

Expressing his gratitude to the Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, for evincing interest in Yanam's development, Mr. Rao said the Public Works Department had drawn up plans for a Rs. 6-crore water treatment plants at Darialdippa, Kanakalapeta and Yanam town to providing clean drinking water.

He said the Government General Hospital at Yanam, which was renovated with additional facilities at a cost of Rs. 2 crores, would be inaugurated in the next few months. Sufficient number of doctors and other staff would be posted in the hospital to provide full-fledged services to the people, he said.

Mr. Rao said the PWD had implemented the Rs 1.3-crore special scheme to replace dinking water distribution lines to all households in the region. The old pipes were laid about 40 years ago and there were complaints that water was not being supplied in sufficient quantity.

Yanam would become `hut free' by year-end as all the 3,300 huts would be converted into concrete structures. About 2,800 hut-dwellers have already been provided a subsidy of Rs. 40,000 by the Government to convert their huts into concrete structures under the Kamarajar Birth Centenary Housing scheme. The subsidy for the remaining families would be distributed soon and Yanam would become the first region in the country to be a `hut free' town, he said.

Mr. Rao said he would participate in a meeting convened by the Andhra Pradesh Government in Hyderabad on June 21 to decide on releasing more Godavari water for Yanam. The region was now getting 19 cusecs, which is being used for irrigation and drinking purposes. This would go up to 30 cusecs; a decision is expected soon.
