PONDICHERRY, JUNE 14. The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, has said that the Union Public Service Commission has assured that it would fill up the posts of specialists in the Department of Medicine in the Government Hospital here by July. According to a release from the Health Ministry here today, Mr. Valsaraj held discussions with the UPSC Chairman in New Delhi recently and apprised him of the shortage of doctors in the hospital. The Minister also drew the UPSC's attention on the need for general duty medical officers. To ensure that the health services did not suffer, the health department authorities held a `walk-in interview' on June 11 to select doctors on a contract basis. However, the government was not intending to recruit doctors on a permanent basis and as part of this the Minister held talks with the UPSC Chairman. Specialists in anaesthesiology, neuro surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and radio diagnosis departments would be appointed. (The health department authorities evolved a scheme of associating doctors and other medical personnel from private hospitals and colleges in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions in view of the shortage of doctors. However, this drew flak from the Confederation of the Health Employees Associations and some of the political parties).
