TUMKUR,
JUNE 28.
Mr. Manjunath made a statement on the issue in Bangalore on June 24. But the Tumkur University staff here received a letter on June 23 asking them to close the offices at Ambedkar Bhavan on Mahatma Gandhi Road and shift the furniture to the post-graduate centre at the Government Junior College grounds.
The Director of the Tumkur University, I.S. Shivakumar, told The Hindu that a letter to dismantle the university's offices was received by him. He said he could not take action on the issue, as he feared that it would cause tension in the area. Students and members of the public were agitated over the Minister's remark on the university.
The National Students Union of India, the Students Federation, and the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad had been staging agitations against the move to close down the Tumkur University.
All the three students' organisations had organised "college bandhs" in the district. The principals of the colleges met on the campus of Siddhartha Institute of Technology on Monday to discuss the situation.
H. Bhaskar, Special Officer of the Tumkur University, was said to be away in New Delhi in connection with a project on watershed development.
