THENI, JUNE 29. The PWD Minister, O. Paneerselvam, has said the Government Medical College and 300-bed hospital in Andipatti Taluk will start functioning shortly as construction of buildings has almost been completed. Inspecting the new buildings at Shanmugasundarapuram village in Andipatti taluk yesterday, he said the hospital-cum-college project, launched by the Chief Minister at a cost of Rs. 12 crores on September 16 last, was speeded up for completion within the scheduled time. The hospital, being constructed on 18.335 hectares of land, would have sophisticated facilities and a nursing college. Construction of the faculty block consisting of two floors with a plinth area of 6,551.54 square metres and the hospital consisting of four floors with a plinth area of 7,009.32 square metres was over. He told the officials to expedite the work and finish them before the scheduled time. Efforts were on to provide additional facilities such as waiting room to accommodate visitors coming to hospital and a parking bay. Official sources said priority had been given to start the hospital, main criteria for obtaining consent from the medical council and the Central Government to open the medical college in the next academic year. Thangathamizhselvan, MP; Chellamuthu, panchayat chairman; and Thiagarajan, Executive Engineer (buildings) accompanied the Minister.
