ACB raids Sub-Registrar office
HYDERABAD: Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau conducted a surprise check on the office of the Sub-Registrar, Suryapet, in Nalgonda district and found two private document writers collecting amounts from people visiting the office. They seized Rs.5,990 from the document writers - V. Venkanna and K. Madhusudhan Reddy.
ECET counselling on schedule
HYDERABAD: Those candidates who have qualified in ECET (FDH)-2004, but applied for recounting in certain subjects in the diploma examination held during April/May are asked to attend counselling as per the admission notification given for their respective courses and ranks, according to a press release.
Passenger trains cancelled
HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has said that the Guntakal - Bellary (metre gauge) section will be closed for gauge conversion work between Guntakal and Hagari, a distance of 36.5 km, from June 30. Consequently, passenger train nos. 289 Guntakal - Bellary, 290 Bellary - Guntakal and 287 Pakala - Bellary have been cancelled from the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Train no. 288 Bellary - Pakala passenger, running between Bellary and Dharmavaram, will now run between Guntakal and Dharmavaram, according to a press release.
Withdraw GO: BC association
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Backward Classes Welfare Association has urged the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, to withdraw the GO closing down ashram schools and hostels meant for students belonging to fishermen and shepherd communities, according to the association president, R. Krishnaiah.
Scheduled Caste MLAs feted
Hyderabad: The Scheduled Castes Cell of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee felicitated SC MLAs and Ministers of the party at Gandhi Bhavan on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by G. Venkata Swamy, MP, and G. Vinod, G. Surya Rao, J. Geetha Reddy and Mareppa, Ministers, and Kuthuhalamma, MLA. The meeting was presided by the chairman of the cell, Ramulu.
Wages to sweepers sought
HYDERABAD: The non-payment of salaries to sweepers and contract employees of gram panchayat was raised by M.A. Gafoor (CPI-M) during zero hour in the Assembly on Tuesday. Mr. Gafoor said sweepers were denied wages for 18 months and for contingency staff for six months. . C. Venkat Reddy, floor leader of the CPI, demanded that the contract of lecturers appointed in Government degree and junior colleges on temporary basis be renewed.
Doctors donate Rs. 30 lakhs
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors Association has contributed Rs. 30 lakhs for the free power scheme. A cheque for the amount was presented to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday by a delegation led by its president, N. Krishna Reddy. Members of the delegationsaid doctors working in the Directorate of Health, Medical Education, Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, Employees State Insurance and Institute of Preventive Medicine had voluntarily offered day's basic salary.
Actor undertakes padayatra
TIRUPATI: Comedian, M.S. Narayana, a self-proclaimed fan of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that the first month's collection of his film, `Koduku,' which he is directing, will be given to the Chief Minister's free power scheme. Accompanied by his son, Vikram, hero of the film, and the distributor, Paras Jain, Mr. Narayana undertook a padayatra on Tuesday from Ambedkar statue to Mini Pratap theatre here. Interestingly, he was clad in a dhoti and headgear resembling the Chief Minister.
Medical seats for
victims of terrorism
HYDERABAD: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, has decided to allocate four MBBS seats at Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College at Safdargunj Hospital, New Delhi, for the year 2004-2005 reserved for the spouse/children of the deceased and disabled civilian victims of terrorism.

Commemorative stamps released
HYDERABAD: A set of three commemorative postage stamps and a miniature sheet on the `Great Trigonometrical Arc: 200 years' were released by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Department of Posts, on Monday. The Great Trigonometrical Arc is considered the foundation of topographical surveys in the country. The former Surveyor-General, B.B. Sinha, released the stamps and miniature at the office of the Additional Surveyor-General, Andhra Pradesh Geo-Spatial Data Centre (APGDC), here. He received an album from the Chief Postmaster-General, Andhra Pradesh Postal Circle, T.S. Govindarajan. The commemorative stamps were on the Great Trigonometrical Survey, Radhanath Sikdar and Pandit Nain Singh. The Director, Survey Training Institute, Brig. Manoj Tayal, was present.
ASCI meet on school education
HYDERABAD: The Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) will conduct a roundtable on `Quality school education: achievement and sustainability' here on July 2 and 3. It includes a presentation on `Teacher absenteeism in elementary schools' by officials from World Bank, which is funding the event. It will be attended by representatives of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, United Nations Development Fund for Women, Department for International Development, and others.
Telugu Desam allegation
HYDERABAD: Four Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders from Anantapur district have alleged that the Congress workers were intentionally killing their cadre but dubbed them "clashes over personal rivalry."
At a news conference here on Tuesday, former MPs, K. Srinivasulu, D.K. Parthasarathi, P. Samanthakamani and Hanumantharao Chowdhary, said the killings were systematically carried out.
Sanskrit scholar for US meet
TIRUPATI: R.S. Tripathi, a scholar from the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati has been invited by the World Association of Vedic Studies (WAVES) to attend its 5th international meet to be held at the University of Maryland, Washington DC. He will present a paper on `Visistadvaita and Christianity'. Tripathi has been teaching Visistadvaita Vedanta of Sri Ramanuja since the inception of the Department of Vedic School in 1987 and was head of the Department and dean of the Faculty of Darshan in the Vidyapeetha.
Postal target achieved
CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah Superintendent of Post Offices, K. Muniramaiah, said that the Cuddapah postal division surpassed the Rural Postal Life Insurance target last year and hoped that the targeted business of Rs. 85 lakhs fixed for 2004-05 would be achieved. Mr. Muniramaiah, who assumed charge as the new Superintendent on June 23, said that the division did business of Rs. 8 lakhs so far. The targets fixed were: Rs. 43 lakhs for speed post, Rs. 32 lakhs for business post, Rs. 5 lakhs for express post service, Rs. 4 lakhs for media post, Rs. 50,000 for retail post and Rs. 30,000 for greetings post.
Condolence meet
ADILABAD: The State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, N. Indrasena Reddy, the former Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, and the State president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Pradeep, are to visit Adilabad on July 1 in connection with the 13-day ceremony of the death of the Adilabad Municipal Chairman and BJP leader, Lala Radheshyam. The Chairman had died in a road accident on June 18 near Toopran in Medak district. A condolence meet is to be held at the Marwadi dharmashala on July 1, according to the party's district leaders.
Protest by women
KARIMNAGAR: Women and girl students of Jagtial town took out a massive rally on Tuesday under the aegis of Rural Education and Community Health (REACH), a voluntary organisation, denouncing the murder of Sri lakshmi, an MCA student, in Vijayawada recently. Women self-help group and college girls participated in the rally and demanded severe punishment for the culprit. They also set fire to an effigy of the accused, Manohar, and submitted a memorandum to the RDO, Surya Rao, urging that the Government curb atrocities against women.
Doctor's day
NIZAMABAD: The district branch of the Indian Medical Association is to honour nine doctors on the eve of Doctor's day on July 1. The president of the IMA, K. Swamy Goud, and Secretary, P. V. Ramakrishna, in a statement said K. Madan Mohan Rao, V. Viswanatham, P. Krishnamurthy, K. Surender Reddy, U. Bramhaji Rao, R. Balaiah, P. Jaini Nehru, P. Jhansi Bala and P. Laxmaiah Chowdary would be honoured on at a function in the IMA hall.
Padayatra against suicides
NIZAMABAD: The United Front of people's organisations has decided to go on a padayatra to build confidence in the farming community and people who suffered in the struggle between police and naxals from Wednesday. The secretary of the AP Rythu Coolie Sangham, Shankaraiah, said the padayatra would begin from Bhavanipet in Machareddy mandal . Another padayatra would be taken out from the Medak district. The two would meet at Gambhiraopet in Karimnagar district and end in Sircilla town, where a public meeting is planned on July 5.
