Power project will go on even if BPL backs out: Rosaiah

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JUNE 29. The Finance Minister, K. Rosaiah, has assured that the Government will have the 510 MW power project at Ramagundam executed by AP Genco or some other agency, in case BPL, which has been sanctioned the venture, backs out.

The Minister told G. Mukunda Reddy (TRS) that the power purchase agreement (PPA) between the BPL and the erstwhile APSEB was entered into on 31.10.1994 and the same was amended twice— on 29.1.1999 and 10.7.1993. The BPL commenced work in May 1999 and stopped it on its own in July 2001. The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission after conducting public hearing granted consent for the final version of the PPA.

He said the BPL had not been able to generate funds required for the project from its lending financial institutions and it was for this reason construction activities were suspended. The Government and the Transmission Corporation (Transco) had fulfilled the necessary requirements for BPLto achieve the financial closure which they have failed to meet so far. The financial closure had to be achieved by July 7, 2004, and company representatives would be called and reminded by the Transco in this regard.

`No synthetic milk'

Replying to another question by Malreddy Ranga Reddy (Congress), Mr. Rosaiah said that no instances had come to their notice of milk vendors adding chemicals and supplying it the hotels and individuals.

Water scheme

Answering a question by G. Demudu (CPI) and L. Raja Rao (BSP), the Social Welfare Minister, Redya Naik, assured that the Government would take up a Rs.104-crore protected drinking water scheme for tribal villages and habitations which were not yet covered by it, after getting funds from the Centre.
