Advocates to suspend work
CHENNAI JUNE 29. The Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) today decided to "suspend court work indefinitely from June 30" over the jurisdiction limits of the Madurai Bench. An extraordinary general body meeting of the association adopted a resolution that the protest would continue till the "Chief Justice issues proper circular recommending retention of larger number of districts with the principal seat of the court." While finalising the jurisdiction-related matters geographical location of districts alone should not be considered, said S. Prabakaran, MHAA president.
5 Inspectors-General promoted
CHENNAI JUNE 29. Five Inspectors-General of Police, including R.N. Sawani who is on deputation with the Government of India as the Joint Director (South Zone) of the Central Bureau of Investigation, have been promoted Additional Directors-General of Police. The promotion of Mr. Sawani is without prejudice to his deputation. The others promoted are K.S. Shyamsundar, P.R. Thapa, Vibhakar Sharma and P. Thangarajan. Mr. Thapa, who is on deputation with the Government of India as the Chief Vigilance Officer, Tehri Hydro Development Corporation, Dehra Dun, has also been promoted without prejudice to his deputation. Mr. Shyamsundar has been posted as ADGP, Special Operations, Refugee Camp, Mandapam. Mr. Sharma has been posted as ADGP, Administration. He replaces K.V.S. Murthy, who is the new ADGP of the Crime Branch CID in Chennai. Mr. Thangarajan has been posted as the ADGP, Economic Offences Wing, Chennai, in the existing vacancy. V. Balachandran, who was ADGP, Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department, will be member of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board in the place of D. Mukherjee, who has already been transferred.
Remand prisoner escapes
KARUR JUNE 29. A remand prisoner, facing 28 cases of theft and lodged in the Salem Central Prison, escaped when he was being brought back from Madurai last night. Sources said N. Muruganandam (26) was being escorted by bus after having been produced before the judicial magistrate I, Madurai. When it halted at a motel at Andipattikottai on Karur-Dindigul border, the prisoner, on the plea of answering nature's call, vanished into nearby forests under cover of darkness.
Bid to burgle school
Nagercoil June 29. The police are on the look-out for a seven-member gang which tried to burgle a school near Vadasery early today. According to police sources, the gang members entered the SMRV higher secondary school and broke open the front door of the office after tying night watchman Sundaram (65) to a tree. They tried to break bureaus containing records and cash, but in vain. They managed to remove the locker from the room wall with a lever. As they could not open the locker, they left it on the school premises and escaped.
2 female babies for the cradle
Dharmapuri June 29. Two newborn female babies were handed over to the cradle baby centre at the Dharmapuri General Hospital here today. Farm labourers, Govindaraj and Alamelu, who already have two daughters, handed over their third female child to the centre. Another woman, Kaliammal, who found an abandoned female infant on a field handed it over to the centre.
`Clear cane arrears'
CHENNAI June 29. The Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) has urged the Government to clear immediately procurement arrears due to sugarcane growers. In a statement here, the general secretary, M. Shanmugham, said that with dues having accumulated to Rs. 500 crores, farmers were not able to raise sugarcane. This, in turn, affected cane supply to mills and consequently sugar production suffered. The federation demanded early payment of dues by the Government by availing itself of the loan being offered by the Centre.
President thanked
CHENNAI JUNE 29. The State president of the Harijan Sevak Sangh, P. Maruthi, has thanked the President and the Prime Minister for nominating Nirmala Deshpande Member of Parliament. It was a recognition of the services of a senior Gandhian who dedicated her life to "Jai Jagat" (Victory to the world). "I am sure that her nomination to the Rajya Sabha will be an added advantage in highlighting the problems of the downtrodden, particularly Harijans and other silent sufferers and also her experience in the field of `Jai Jagat', with a special emphasis on friendship and peace with Pakistan and China", said Mr. Maruthi.
Stamp on Aacharya Bhikshu
CHENNAI JUNE 29. The Department of Posts will release a commemorative stamp on Wednesday in the denomination of Rs. 5 in honour of Aacharya Bhikshu, founder of Jain Swetamber Terapanth sect. According to a release from the Chief Postmaster-General, Tamil Nadu Circle, Chennai, stamps, first day covers and information sheets will be available for sale at all philatelic bureau/counters from the date of issue.
Touch-screen kiosk installed
PUDUKOTTAI JUNE 29. A touch-screen kiosk has been installed at the Aranthangi taluk office and it will function from July 1. The public have to pay Rs.2 to view data and Rs. 20 to get printout. The connectivity between registrar and taluk offices at Alangudi and Kolathur was in the final stages.
Advocates' threat
TIRUCHI JUNE 29 . The Tiruchi Bar Association has decided to abstain from all courts and judicial forums until the authorities concerned confirm the territorial jurisdiction of Tiruchi district with the High Court Bench at Madurai. Its president, M. Lakshmanan, and secretary, V. Ilamurugu, told presspersons here today that they would organise a meeting in this regard.
Special buses
TIRUCHI JUNE 29 . The State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam, will operate 50 special buses on July 1 and 2 to Tiruvannamalai from Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur districts in view of the `Pournami girivalam' at the Sri Arunachaleswarar temple. A release issued here said the buses would be operated from Tiruchi, Karur, Musiri, Thuraiyur, Manapparai, Thuvarankurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Jayamkondam.
Mettur level
Tiruchi June 29 . Water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 53.52 feet today. The inflow was 1747 cusecs and the discharge was 2000 cusecs.
Killed in accident
Dharmapuri June 29. One person was killed and 11 others seriously injured when the maxi-cab in which they were travelling and a lorry collided at Adhiyamankottai here on Monday. Police said 12 labourers were travelling in the maxi-cab to Hosur when they crashed into a lorry bound to Mettupalayam. While Suresh (21) died on the spot, the injured were admitted to the Dharmapuri General Hospital.
PDS salesman suspended
ERODE JUNE 29 . The Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, B. Joghee, ordered suspension of a fair price shop salesman K. Manoharan on charges of irregularities. According to a press release, the officials conducted a surprise raid in 52 ration shops yesterday in Erode and found irregularities in some shops. A fine of Rs. 16,625 was also collected.

ERODE JUNE 29. The Rotary District Governor, L. Radioman, installed M.K. Ganesh Bapu as president of the Rotary Club of Gobi. The former Rotary District Governor, S. Bangaru, and others spoke. The other office-bearers are: S. Kothandaraman (vice-president), A. Ilamparithi (secretary), K. Pugalendhi (joint secretary) and S.R. Chandramouli (treasurer).
Held for dowry harassment
TIRUNELVELI JUNE 29. The Ambasamudhram police have arrested three persons on the charge of harassing a woman demanding more dowry. The police said C. Mari Sujatha, 27, of Muthiahpuram in Tuticorin district, was married to G. Sankaranarayanan, a PWD engineer, of Velayuthanagar. Sankaranarayanan and his relatives harassed Ms. Sujatha for more dowry, as his younger brother needed Rs. 5 lakhs to secure a government job. When Sujatha's parents could not give the amount, her in-laws chased her away. On a complaint from Ms. Sujatha, the police arrested Mr. Sankaranarayanan, his brother, G. Ganesan, and Maharajan, a conductor. A search has been launched for three others.
Search for Inspector
TUTICORIN JUNE 29. The Kulasekaranpattinam police are on the look-out for an Inspector on the charge of rape. The police said Ramakrishnan, who was then Inspector of Police of Kulasekarapattinam, allegedly raped a teenage girl when she had visited the station in connection with a complaint filed by her mother. She gave a petition to the Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, at a grievances day meeting. On the Collector's directive, the Kulasekaranpattinam police have filed a case against Ramakrishnan, who is now attached to the Tuticorin district police control room.
House burgled
NAGERCOIL JUNE 29 . Unidentified persons struck at the house of an engineer on Monday and made away with Rs. 5 lakhs. Deenbai, 57, of Pune, was working as an engineer in a private windmill company at Variyur near Anjugramam.
Egg distribution
DINDIGUL JUNE 29. Eggs will be supplied in noon meal to 2, 50, 757 children in the district, the Collector, S. Murugaia, has said. Distributing eggs to children at the M.V.M. Higher Secondary School here on Monday, he said 2, 02, 034 eggs would be supplied to panchayat union schools, government schools and private schools, 43, 941 eggs to `anganwadis' and 4, 782 eggs to the noon meal centres in three municipalities on Thursdays.
Water level
MADURAI JUNE 29. The level in Periyar dam today stood at 126.90 feet, with a storage of 4,028 mcft. The inflow was 905 cusecs, and the discharge 1,700 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam was 43.41 feet, with an inflow of 999 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar storage was 5,192 mcft. The Periyar reservoir received a rainfall of 34 mm followed by Tekkadi 5.
