`Allow cooperative society to run liquor shops'
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI,
JUNE 29.
The All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) today appealed to the Chief Minister to allow the century-old Triplicane Urban Cooperative Society (TUCS) to run Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) outlets, which were taken over from it by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC).
The alleged non-clearance of dues by the TASMAC to the tune of Rs. 1 crore to the TUCS towards hiring charges for running liquor shops also hit the society, the State AITUC president, A.M. Gopu, said here in a statement.
The TUCS had hitherto been managing losses, running retail IMFL outlets. It was not able to disburse arrears to over 850 employees as the TASMAC had not cleared the dues.
Mr. Gopu alleged that the TASMAC, which had taken over 15 IMFL shops, till recently run by the TUCS, with all infrastructure without prior notice, had not paid an advance of around Rs.45 lakhs for the buildings it hired. It had not even remitted the rent for the past eight months, accumulating to Rs. 30 lakhs.
