9,000 digital video discs seized

CHENNAI, JUNE 29. The Air Cargo Intelligence Unit (ACIU) of the Customs has seized 9,000 digital video discs (DVDs)— of English and Tamil movies— valued at Rs. 18 lakhs.

According to P.N. Vittal Dass, Commissioner of Customs, surveillance was mounted on specific intelligence of attempts to smuggle in DVDs of English and Tamil movies through minor airports.

Customs officers intercepted a consignment of five packages meant for transhipment and clearance through Coimbatore. The packages were declared ``personal effects'' in the import general manifesto and the airway bill. On suspicion, the consignment was examined and the DVDs were found.

The seizure indicated a shift in the operation of the DVD racketeers from the city to peripheral and less important airports, Mr.Dass said.
