NEW DELHI, JULY 1. Parul Goswami made it to the quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament in Tlemcen, Algeria, according to information received here. Parul beat Dora Kiss of Hungary 6-3, 6-0 and the seventh-seeded Mariana Muci of Venezuela 7-5, 6-4 in that order before going down 1-6, 3-6 to Joanne Akl of France. The second-seeded Sai Jayalakshmy also made the quarterfinals, but went down 1-6, 6-4, 4-6 to the sixth-seeded Diana Vranceanu of Germany. Sai had earlier beaten Paola Iovino of Venezuela 6-1, 6-3 and Anastasia Michail of Greece 6-3, 6-2. Geeta Manohar beat local girl Malika Bouakel 6-0, 6-1, but lost to Vranceanu in the second round. Nandini Perumal lost 2-6, 1-6 to Assia Halo of Algeria in the first round, and Khushchehr Italia also went down 5-7, 6-3, 1-6 to Mariana Muci in the first round. In doubles, Sai Jayalakshmy in partnership with Eva Valkova of the Czech Republic made the semifinals, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Eva Fernandez-Brugues of Spain and Khushchehr Italia after a bye in the first round. Fernandez-Brugues and Italia had earlier beaten Geeta Manohar and Nandini Perumal 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 in the first round. Parul had a good run in the doubles too as she in partnership with Jennifer Elie of the U.S. beat Sana Bn Salah of Algeria and Roseta Navarro-Pons of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), before losing 2-6, 6-7 (2-7) to Assia Halo and Samia Medjahdi of Algeria in the quarterfinals.
